The nationally and internationally recognized research focuses of the university include in particular the special research areas 367 (Molecular Mechanisms of Inflammatory and Degenerative Processes) and 470 (Glycostructures in Biosystems - Representation and Effect), as well as clinical research groups on neuroendocrinology and intersexuality, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) .

As part of the excellence initiative , the university was recognized with the Graduate School for Computing in Medicine and Life Sciences in 2007 and has since received sustained funding. This Graduate School Lübeck trains doctoral students in the field of computer science in medicine and in the life sciences.

The University of Lübeck has been part of the Inflammation Research Excellence Cluster since 2007 together with the Borstel Research Center , the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine and the Bad Bramstedt Rheumatism Clinic involved. In the “Inflammation Research Excellence Cluster”, special centers for inflammation medicine were founded in Lübeck and Kiel.

In addition, the university works closely with the Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and is involved in the Association of North German Universities to improve teaching and research.

Research projects in the humanities at the university are bundled in a separate profile area “Cultural Studies and Knowledge Cultures”. The Center for Cultural Studies Research Lübeck (ZKFL), which emerged from this context, has been promoting cultural studies research and exhibition projects since 2010 in a partnership between university institutes and municipal institutions.

history

Tower building of the University of Lübeck

The Strecknitz sanatorium was opened in 1912, the foundation stone was laid in 1909. During the Nazi era, 605 psychiatric patients were deported from the sanatorium to Eichberg in Hesse as part of the “Fire Action” . In 1983 a memorial stone was erected on the clinic premises. After 1945 the facility was the City Hospital East .

On November 3, 1964, the Lübeck Medical Academy (MAL, also the 2nd Medical Faculty of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel) emerged from the campus , at which 14 students began their studies in the clinical section of the human medicine course in the first year. In 1965, the city of Lübeck awarded the academy the Lübsche city seal from 1226. It is still the seal of the university in a modified form. During this time, teaching was still divided between the East and South Hospital.

From 1964, Johannes Eichler (1920–1998), who received the first chair for anesthesiology in Schleswig-Holstein in Lübeck (at the location of Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel ) , set up the central anesthesia department of the Medical Academy. Since some chairs were vacant, students had to go to Kiel for some exams. In 1973 the academy was promoted to the Medical University of Lübeck (MHL) and thus independent of the University of Kiel.

Poster from the AStA of the University of Lübeck

In 1985 the name was changed to Medical University of Lübeck (MUL) and in 2002 to University of Lübeck .

After plans by the state government in autumn 2005 to merge the universities of Kiel and Lübeck to form the State University of Schleswig-Holstein, protests with over 4,000 demonstrators broke out in Lübeck. This enabled the plans to be averted.

In May 2010, the Kiel state government planned to close the medical faculty for cost reasons. The plans were to expire the courses from the 2011/2012 winter semester and relocate to Kiel University . The result was an exodus of professors, especially from research. The closure of the medical course met with fierce criticism from the public, science, politics and even within the CDU .

The protest action Lübeck fights, largely organized by the AStA of the university, took place . In June 2010, 14,000 people demonstrated in Kiel against the closure of the faculty, it was the largest demonstration in Kiel in the history of Schleswig-Holstein. In July 2010, the continuation of medical training in Lübeck could be ensured by the fact that the federal government promised financial contributions as part of a change of sponsor of the Kiel Institute for Marine Research in the amount of the savings to be expected when the Lübeck medical faculty was closed, on condition that the medical ones are retained Faculty Lübeck.
