The Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Lung Center (FZB) is a research facility of the Leibniz Association , which is engaged in interdisciplinary biomedical research in the field of pneumology , i. H. who has lung and bronchial diseases . The focus is on investigations into questions of infection , allergies and asthma as well as chronic inflammation of the lungs.
The Borstel Research Center was founded in 1947 as the Borstel Tuberculosis Research Institute . In 1963 it was converted into a foundation under civil law. It was called the Tuberculosis Research Institute until 1965. With around 520 employees, the FZB is the largest employer in Borstel ( Sülfeld municipality , Segeberg district ). The annual budget of the FZB is around 26 million euros, of which around 8 million euros come from third-party funds .
Structure of the research center
The Borstel Research Center is divided into three areas, each of which is assigned to a director:

Together with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine and the Heinrich Pette Institute, Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (both in Hamburg), the FZB forms the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI). This virtual Leibniz Center was founded in October 2005 to strengthen basic infectiological research and promote the possibilities for exploiting research results.
In addition to pure research, there is also a hospital on the premises of the FZB, the Borstel Medical Clinic , which specializes in the treatment of lung diseases, including allergies and tuberculosis in particular . The National Reference Center for Mycobacteria , which is also recognized by the WHO as the European Reference Laboratory and Supranational Reference Laboratory , is located at the FZB as a service facility .
The research center and its mansion
The landmark of the FZB is the Borstel manor house in rococo style, built in 1751 and located on the site. In 1930 the estate was converted into a children's rest home and since then has had an eventful history as a training center for female labor service under the National Socialists and as a reception camp for refugees after the Second World War . After the FZB was founded in 1947, the manor house served as a laboratory building, library, canteen and representative office. In 2004 it had to be closed due to the risk of collapse. The mansion was renovated for around 7 million euros from 2003 to 2007.
Scientific misconduct
Scientific misconduct occurred within the “Immunobiology” laboratory group between 2001 and 2010 . The former research associates E. Bulanova and V. Budagian manipulated images for a total of six publications. An investigative commission came to the conclusion that the senior author and working group leader Silvia Bulfone-Paus was also to blame for a lack of compliance with the supervisory duties. In the meantime, manipulations have been granted for another four publications and a withdrawal (retraction) has been applied for and accepted as a precautionary measure for another two publications. In December 2012, the main committee of the DFG decided against Bulfone-Paus to issue a written complaint, to be excluded from the right to submit applications for three years, as a referee and to be excluded from the DFG committees for three years. However, since Bulfone-Paus had already proposed on her own initiative that her offices should be suspended and that she should not be used as a reviewer and in the committees, the main committee decided to include this period in the measures taken. Only the utterance of a written complaint should have an effect. Bulfone-Paus has not held any management positions at the FZB since October 2013.
