Michael Gerke
Michael Gerke (born in the 20th century ) is a former German disabled athlete .
Life
Michael Gerke is severely disabled. Despite his disability-related restrictions, he did not want to do without some sport. As his sporting discipline, he chose table tennis , which he could practice in the TT 10 starting class . Together with Rolf Beck, Gerke became the first all-German table tennis master in men's doubles.
Because of his good performance, Gerke was appointed to the German national disabled sports team. At the 1990 World Championships in Assen , he won a gold medal in the individual in his starting class as well as a silver medal in the team and bronze in the open individual (standing). In 1991 he became European champion with the German team and won bronze in the individual.
At the 1992 Paralympic Summer Games in Barcelona , Gerke managed to win a total of three medals. He was both Olympic champion in the men's singles and in a team with Marcus Vahle and Christopher Windecker . He also took part in the open competition for standing players (starting classes 6 to 10), in which he took second place and thus won a silver medal. For these achievements, Michael Gerke was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993 by Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker .
