Michael Gerzon

Michael A. Gerzon (born December 4, 1945 in Birmingham - † May 6, 1996 ) was a British mathematician and audio expert. Among other things, he is known for the development of Ambisonics , a process for recording and reproducing a sound field.

Gerzon studied mathematics at Oxford University , received his MA in 1967 and studied axiomatic quantum physics as a postgraduate . He was also interested in music , poetry , sensory perception and information theory . He was fascinated by sound recording and made many of his own recordings, some of which were released on LP or CD . Among other things, he recorded On A Friday, a predecessor band of Radiohead. He was a critic of the quadraphonic systems of the 1970s and helped develop Ambisonics, a surround sound system . Gerzon was a member of the Audio Engineering Society , which made him an AES Fellow in 1978 and awarded him the AES Gold Medal in 1991. He died of an asthma attack a few days before the 100th AES Convention in Copenhagen, where he was supposed to give three lectures .
