Michael Grau (* 1955 in Dorsten ) is a German diplomat who left active service in June 2020, his last position as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abidjan , the seat of government of the African Côte d'Ivoire .

After attending school and studying law (graduating with the first state examination) in Tübingen and Freiburg, Michael Grau joined the Foreign Service in 1982 . He worked at the embassies in Bogotá and Algiers as well as at the permanent missions to the OECD in Paris and to the United Nations in New York before taking over the management of the Consulate General in Novosibirsk in Russia . After working as a division head in the Department of Culture and Communication of the Foreign Office in Berlin , Michael Grau represented the Federal Republic of Germany as Ambassador in Panama from July 2009 . In August 2012 he took over the management of the German Consulate General in the Kazakh city of Almaty and in September 2014 moved to Vientiane , capital of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos, as Ambassador . From August 2017 until the end of his active service in June 2020, Michael Grau headed the German embassy in Abidjan , the seat of government of the African Côte d'Ivoire .
