Michael Hereth

Michael Hereth (born December 1, 1938 in Bayreuth ) is a German-French political scientist .

youth

After graduating from the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Stuttgart, he studied economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and obtained his doctorate in Erlangen. phil. His teachers were Erich Preiser (economics) and Eric Voegelin (political science) as well as Waldemar Besson (doctoral supervisor in Erlangen).

career

After working for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Georg-von-Vollmar-Akademie , Hereth became a research assistant at Peter Weber-Schaefer in Bochum (East Asian Studies and Politics) in 1968. In 1972 he holds the chair for political science at the University of Duisburg and the University of Duisburg. In 1976 he accepted a position at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg. Numerous research stays in the USA (Harvard and New York) and France follow. He will stay in Hamburg until his retirement in 2001.

politics

Hereth was state chairman and then for a short time deputy national chairman of the Liberal Student Union of Germany , in 1961 he joined the SPD . As a student, and then until 1968, he was part of the circle of friends around the former deputy federal chairman and Bavarian state chairman of the SPD, Waldemar von Knoeringen , who sought to reform and modernize the SPD.

In 1970 he was elected to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Bochum constituency 107 (Bochum III) for the SPD ; In 1975 he refused to run again.
