Michael Joseph Mahony

Michael Joseph Mahony (born April 11, 1951 in Sydney , Australia ) is an Australian biologist . His main research interests are conservation biology , cytogenetics and genetics of the Australian southern frogs .

Life

Mahony is the son of Vincent Patric and Margaret Mary Mahony, nee McCarney. From 1984 to 1985 he was a research fellow in a cytogenetic laboratory at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. In 1986 he received his Ph.D. with the dissertation Cytogenetics of myobatrachid frogs at Macquarie University in Sydney. PhD in biology. From 1986 to 1990 he worked as a postdoc and research assistant at the South Australian Museum in Adelaide . In March 1990 he married Leanne Kaye Pattinson. From this marriage a son and a daughter were born. From 1991 to 1995 he was a lecturer and since 1996 he has been a professor at the University of Newcastle . From 1995 to 1997, Mahony was New South Wales Coordinator for the Species Survival Commission for Endangered Frogs of the International Union for Conservation of Nature . From 1996 to 1997 he was a member of the Technical Advisory Board for Regional Forest Assessment in New South Wales.

From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the National Park Advisory Board of New South Wales. From 1994 to 1997 he served on the Lake Macquarie City Board of Directors . From 1996 to 1997 he was a member of the Olympic Coordination Board in Sydney.

Mahony is currently a member of the Australian Genetics Society, the Australian Herpetological Society, the Australian Wildlife Management Society and the Australian Ecological Society.

The frogs described by Mahony include Litoria daviesae , Litoria jungguy , Neobatrachus albipes , Neobatrachus kunapalari , Mixophyes coggeri , Spicospina flammocaerulea , Uperoleia glandulosa and the extinct species Rheobatrachus vitellinus .

Dedication names

In honor of Mahony, the frog Uperoleia mahonyi from the family of the Australian southern frogs (Myobatrachidae) was named in 2016 .
