Michael Keith, 13th Earl of Kintore

Michael Canning William John Keith, 13th Earl of Kintore ( February 22, 1939 - October 30, 2004 ) was a British peer and politician .

life and career

Keith was born in February 1939 to James Keith, 12th Earl of Kintore (1908-1989) and Delia Virginia Loyd (1915-2007). He attended Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst .

He served in the Coldstream Guards and earned the rank of lieutenant. From 1974 to 1989 he was a Master of Inverurie . He was Chief of the Name and Arms of Keith. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law (LL.D.) degree from the University of Aberdeen in 1993.

Membership in the House of Lords

After his father's death in 1989, he inherited his title and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . There he sat as a crossbencher . He first took his seat on May 16, 1990. He made his inaugural address on February 12, 1992 on the Scottish economy. He last spoke there on November 8, 1999.

In the 1997/98 session he was present on 127 days. He lost his seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 .

For one of the remaining seats he ran unsuccessfully. He reached place 35 with 28 seats for the Crossbencher.

Family and death

Keith married Mary Plum († 2006) on October 9, 1972, daughter of Elisha Gaddis Plum. They had two children:

  • James William Falconer Keith, 14th Earl of Kintore (born April 15, 1976)
  • Lady Iona Delia Mary Gaddis Keith (born January 1, 1978)

He lived at Keith Hall in Inverurie (as of 2003). Keith died on October 30, 2004 at the age of 65.
