Michael Johannes Kockel ( Upper Sorbian Michał Jan Kokla ; born October 25, 1840 in Räckelwitz ; † August 29, 1922 in Crostwitz ) was a Sorbian landowner from Crostwitz and a member of the Saxon state parliament .

Life

He was born on October 25, 1840 in Räckelwitz (Worklecy), married Maria Nazdalek (Nasdala) from Piskowitz on May 31, 1870 in Nebelschütz , had five children and died on August 29, 1922 in Crostwitz. In 1866 he took over a farm in Crostwitz for 2100 thalers. In the 18th century the farm belonged to the "Lißak" family known in Crostwitz, so that it was often mentioned in writing as Michał Kokla-Lissak.

The farmer and politician Jakob Spittank was his son-in-law.

Political activity

Michael J. Kockel was a member of the Conservative State Association , a conservative political group in the Kingdom of Saxony . He was one of the main organizers of rural Sorbian club life in the last third of the 19th century.

Kockel was a permanent member of the Saxon state parliament for constituency 8 from 1885 until the revolution in 1918. In November 1918, he signed the proclamation of his parliamentary and faction colleague Arnošt Bart-Brězynčanski calling for state-guaranteed minority rights for the Sorbian people. They used the debate about new forms of government to criticize the Saxon school policy towards the Sorbs.

Kockel maintained friendly contact with Adolf Černy , the founder of the Czech-Wendish association Adolf Černý , which was renamed the Society of Friends of Lusatia in 1932 . Since 1881 he was a member of the Maćica Serbska .
