Michael Kurzwelly (born April 27, 1963 in Darmstadt ) is a German action artist .

Life

Kurzwelly grew up in Bonn , studied painting at the Alanus University in Alfter and in 1990 went to Poznań in Poland, where he founded the International Art Center (Międzynarodowe Centrum Sztuki). He has lived in Frankfurt (Oder) since 1998 , where he a. a. from 2004 to 2018 was a lecturer at the European University Viadrina .

He received international attention with the Słubfurt project , which since 1999 has not only merged the cities of Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice , located on the German-Polish border, into a common city ("on the border of two countries that do not exist"), but lives as an ongoing experiment. He calls the strategy he developed of reinterpreting spaces and intervening in them, constructions of reality. He regards this art form as an extended type of applied art , which for him includes both social sculpture and other forms of creative participation by residents in social processes. In 2010 Słubfurt was declared the capital of Nowa America , a reinterpretation of the entire German-Polish border region into a common area that needs to be developed. This is also a civic network that Kurzwelly co-founded.

Another example of his constructions of reality is the white zone project . Kurzwelly produced an actually usable hiking guide around the white zone, an area of 145 km² north of Berlin, which he removed from the map. In 2006, in the nearby village of Zempow, he founded UmLand e. V. the institute for white zone research (iwf) . Since 2008 the hiking trail Blooming Landscapes? about the village of Zempow and the artist published another hiking guide.

In 2010 he realized the hole network project for the Neue Gesellschaft Bildende Kunst (NGBK) , another construction of reality.

Kurzwelly has been a member of the International Artists' Committee (IKG) since December 2012 .
