Michael Francis Morris Lindsay, 2nd Baron Lindsay of Birker (born February 24, 1909 , † February 13, 1994 ) was a British peer and academic .

life and career

Lindsay was born on February 24, 1909 to Alexander Dunlop Lindsay, 1st Baron Lindsay of Birker and Erica Violet Storr. He attended Gresham's School in Holt and Balliol College . After attending college, he became a lecturer at Yanjing University in Beijing , China .

When Japanese troops invaded China during World War II , Lindsay and his wife Hsiao Li joined the Chinese underground. She published a book in 2006 called Bold Plum , mostly written in 1947, about the war years and marriage to Lindsay.

Membership in the House of Lords

In 1952, after the death of his father, Lindsay inherited the title of Baron Lindsay of Birker and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . This made Hsiao Li Lindsay the first British peeress of Chinese origin. He gave his inaugural address on June 24, 1964.

He spoke up sporadically. In 1964 he spoke about the Development Decade of the UN and world trade as well as the Trading Stamps Bill . In the 1970s he spoke up on capitalism and socialism. He spoke on central and local government, civil service and the future of Hong Kong in the 1980s . He last spoke up on July 16, 1990.

Family and death

Lindsay married Hsiao Li , daughter of Colonel Li Wen-Chi on June 25, 1941. They had a son, James Lindsay, 3rd Baron Lindsay of Birker and two daughters, Erica (* 1942, † 1993) and Mary Muriel (* 1951 ).

He died on February 13, 1994 at the age of 84.
