James Francis Lindsay, 3rd Baron Lindsay of Birker (born January 29, 1945 ) is a retired Australian diplomat and British peer and politician .

life and career

Lindsay is the only son of Michael Lindsay, 2nd Baron Lindsay of Birker and Hsiao Li Lindsay, Baroness Lindsay of Birker , and grandson of the Scottish educator Sandie Lindsay, 1st Baron Lindsay of Birker . He was born on the run from Japanese forces.

James Birker attended the University of Keele and the University of Liverpool and worked as a lecturer ( lecturer ) for physics at Tunghai University in Taichung , Taiwan from 1967 to 1968. From 1969 to 1970 he was a geophysicist on expeditions in Darwin , Australia .

Lindsay joined the Australian diplomatic service in 1972 and was posted as Second Secretary in Chile from 1973 to 1976 , followed by Laos as First Secretary from 1980 to 1981. He was also First Secretary in Bangladesh from 1982 to 1984 and First Secretary from 1987 to 1990 likewise in Venezuela . From 1991 to 1993 he worked at the Australian Foreign Office.

In 1993 he was appointed Deputy High Commissioner for Pakistan , an office he held until 1996, and was then Deputy High Commissioner for Kenya from 1996 to 2000 . He was also Australian Deputy Permanent Representative for Australia to the United Nations Environment Program , also from 1996 to 2000.

Lindsay is currently not a member of the Hereditary Peerage Association .

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in 1994, Lindsay inherited his title and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He took this for the first time on July 17, 1995. He sat there as a crossbencher .

In the session from 1997 to 1998 he was only present in the House of Lords for two days. With the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost his seat. For one of the remaining seats he ran for election, but ended up only in 77th place in the Crossbencher , for which 28 seats were awarded.

He is not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election.

Later career

From 2000 to 2005 was Lindsay Consultant ( Consultant ) by Horn Relief Somalia . In 2003 he was a lecturer ( lecturer ) of international relations at the Beijing Foreign Studies University operates. When Uganda Rural Development Program Trading and Kagadi Uganda he was in 2004 Consultant ( Consultant ). In the same year he was co-founder of Sun Fire Cooking in Somalia .

family

Lindsay first married Mary Rose in 1969, the daughter of WG Thomas. They had no children and were divorced in 1985. In 2000 he married Pamela Collett, daughter of Lon Hutchison. This marriage also remained childless.
