Michael Maurer (Arborist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Maurer (* 1905 ; † 1980 ) was a tree surgeon . He is considered to be the founder of tree care in Germany and ran a tree care company.

Life

From 1935 onwards, Maurer was the first to bring the new knowledge gathered in the United States to Germany. Based on his experience, tree care measures were carried out in the following decades according to his methods, which were intended to ensure the survival of the affected tree veteran. It was important to remove the damage early and to support the natural growth habit. However, most of his maintenance measures in the 1940s are no longer considered contemporary today. Maurer closed cavities in the trunk or in the branches with precisely fitting dummy seals made of brick, concrete , asphalt or cement . However, these backfills did not follow the movements of the tree caused by the wind, created counter pressure and blew up the tree from the inside. Harmful fungi and parasites could settle between the filling and the wood . That is why Maurer later removed the dummy seals.

From 1935 Maurer renovated numerous natural monuments in Germany, in 1958 the big oak near Airlenbach , 1965 the Femeiche near Alder , 1969 the Wolframslinde , 1976 the Linde in Schenklengsfeld and the Kasberger Linde and 1977 the Tanzlinde in Effeltrich . He reported on his experiences as a tree surgeon in Aloys Bernatzky's book Baum und Mensch (1973).
