Michael Nehls (born October 20, 1962 ) is a German doctor , molecular geneticist , former racing cyclist and author .

Life

Nehls studied medicine in Freiburg and Heidelberg from 1983 to 1989, and completed his habilitation in 1997 in molecular genetics . As a scientist, he published over 50 original scientific papers, two of them together with Nobel Prize winners Paul Greengard and Martin Evans .

His molecular biological discovery of the molecular switch for the development of the adaptive immune system was honored by the American Society of Immunologists as "Pillar of Immunological Research".

After a career in research and management, the former marathon runner decided to return to competitive sports after a 20-year break.

Several bike marathons and long distance bike races were followed by successful participation in the Race Across America in 2008 . It took Nehls 10 days, 22 hours and 56 minutes for the approximately 4,800 kilometers from Oceanside to Annapolis. He finished 7th out of 27 solo cyclists. Nehls had chosen a new strategy in the history of the race and paused a total of 91 hours. According to his own statements, he was never overtaken on the track. A scientific analysis of his participation was published internationally under the title Physiology, power output and racing strategy of a Race Across America finisher .

He published his experience in a book called Challenge Race Across America . After his second participation in the Race Across America 2010, the film You don't have to win to win was released .

Since 2011, Nehls has published several books on the behavioral changes necessary for healthy aging from his evolutionary perspective , first the Methuselah strategy , then with Alzheimer's lie and Alzheimer's is curable , two books in which he describes his own behavioral theory of Alzheimer's development and Based on this, a prevention strategy is developed. In 2015, he was awarded the Hanse Prize for Psychiatry for his Alzheimer's research.
