Michael J. Noack

Michael Noack (born November 9, 1955 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) is a German dentist . He is a university professor at the Center for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Director of the Polyclinic for Dental Preservation and Periodontology at the University Clinic of the University of Cologne . His scientific focus includes minimally invasive caries therapy and preventive dentistry.

Life

Noack grew up as the son of the oral surgeon Friedrich-Karl Noack and the dentist Gisela Noack in Berlin-Reinickendorf. In 1977 he received approval to study dentistry at the Free University of Berlin . During his studies he was a tutor at the Institute for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Free University of Berlin. After his license to practice medicine in 1982, he worked as a research assistant in the field of tooth preservation and periodontology at the Free University of Berlin and at the Department of Dental Preservation at the Polyclinics North of the Free University of Berlin. In 1986 he received his doctorate and was senior physician and university assistant at the Free University of Berlin until 1994. After completing his habilitation in 1994, Noack was given the license to teach at the Free University of Berlin and a year later for the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1993 to 2010 he was editor-in-chief of the dental journal Die Quintessenz, published by Quintessenz Verlag . Noack followed the call to the University of Cologne in 1996 and was managing director of the Center for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine at the University of Cologne Clinic until 2011. Noack is currently professor and director of the Polyclinic for Dental Conservation and Periodontology at the University Clinic of Cologne. He is also a scientific advisor for companies such as Colgate , Johnson & Johnson , Dentsply and Philips . Since 2006 he has been a member of the ethics committee of the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne.

Scientific contribution

At the beginning of his research in Berlin, the focus was on amalgam replacements and tooth-colored restorations. In addition to the development of posterior composites, the first fundamental work on adhesive-bonded tooth-colored inlays, particularly using the ultrasonic insertion technique, was published. At the University of Cologne, the research topics were more medically-oriented and focused more on cariology . Work was carried out on caries diagnosis, therapy decisions and doctor-patient communication, including participatory decision-making . Current clinical studies deal with the prevention of tooth, mouth and jaw diseases as well as with evidence-based dentistry ( evidence-based medicine ). The research led to implementation in everyday clinical practice, both in health care and in teaching. Since 1998 in particular, gentle, minimally invasive excavations have been carried out at the Cologne center and caries sealed if necessary. The OSCE exam format and peer teaching formats have been anchored in the curriculum since 2006. The concept of a new building for the dental clinic developed by Noack in 2009 based on medical didactic principles could be implemented with funds from the economic stimulus package II . The new building has been in operation since 2011 and has also been scientifically monitored. Noack's commitment can be seen in over 350 scientific lectures worldwide.

Awards

As first author, Noack received the German Society for Tooth Preservation Prize in 1987 for the best poster presentation by a scientist who did not qualify as a professor. Due to his training activities as a speaker, conference leader and editor-in-chief of the dental journal Die Quintessenz , Noack received the Medal of Honor from the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine in 2013 on the occasion of the German Dental Association in Frankfurt : “for the merits of many years of helping to shape the important transformation process from science to implementation in practical work and the resulting excellent level of advanced training ”.

Noack is a member of the following scientific associations, among others: Internat. Association for Dental Research , German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine , German Society for Dental Preservation , German Society for Periodontology , Association of University Lecturers of the ZMK and the German Network Evidence-Based Medicine .
