Michael Philip Candy
Michael Philip Candy (born December 23, 1928 in Bath , England, † November 2, 1994 in Perth , Australia) was a British astronomer .
Life
Candy was the oldest of six children and the only son of his parents. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of London in 1963 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Sussex two years later . He has been doing research at the Royal Greenwich Observatory since 1961 . In 1969 he moved to the observatory in Perth, Australia, where he worked as an astronomer until 1984, when he switched to the staff of the observatory.
Researches
Candy's main focus was on comets and asteroids . In 1986 he was able to successfully calculate the position of Halley's comet . 10 percent of all position calculations were determined under his leadership. In 1960 he had already discovered a comet that was named after it. At the same time he calculated its orbit.
Honors
1959 to 1969 he was director of the Comet Section of the British Astronomical Association (BAA). He also received de Merlin Medal from the British Astronomical Association in 1975 and the asteroid (3015) Candy was named after him.
