Michael Publig

Michael Publig (born July 29, 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian composer, pianist, music manager and editor.

Career

Publig studied piano with Roland Batik at the Vienna Conservatory and social and economic sciences at the Vienna University of Economics and Business .

As a pianist he is active in various international projects in the fields of serious music (chamber music), jazz, Brazilian music, Tango Nuevo and Flamenco.

As a composer, he wrote around 800 works in serious and popular music . He was able to emerge as the winner and laureate of several composition competitions (Gustav Mahler Competition 2006, E- and U-Composition Prize of the ÖKB 2001 and 2002). Publig's works have been performed and broadcast in Europe, Asia, Australia and the USA.

As an arranger, editor and author, Michael Publig has published for several publishers in Austria, Germany, the USA and China. In addition, he dealt with the music of Chick Corea and supervised a. a. until 1996 the unpublished edition of the almost complete complete works. He is also Head of Music Preparation for Hollywood in Vienna.

He has also been teaching arranging at the Vienna University of Music since 2019. He is also a lecturer at the Amadeus Vienna International School for composition, songwriting, film music composition and piano. In the field of music education, he held workshops and master classes for piano, improvisation and jazz harmony. a. at the Music University Vienna , the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna , the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Shanghai Conservatory, China. He was also invited to workshops for music computer programs. As a music mediator he designs, moderates and plays concerts for children and young people.

Publig's activities as a music manager include his professional activity as a long-time publishing director at Doblinger. He was also a juror at the Austrian State Scholarship for Composition. Publig organizes several concerts with a focus on “Jazz Chamber Music” and produces CDs.

Michael Publig composes pieces that combine modern serious music with jazz and with a strong influence of Latin American music. For chamber music works in this style, he coined the term “jazz chamber music”, which summarizes this connection between classical music and jazz. In his educational work he teaches classical musicians jazz and Latin elements.
