Michael Redtenbacher

Michael Redtenbacher (born May 7, 1940 in Vienna ) is an Austrian surgeon.

Life

Redtenbacher graduated from RG 15 in Vienna in 1958 and then studied medicine at the University of Vienna. After completing his studies in 1965, he completed his training in surgery under his teacher Paul Kyrle . In 1971 he was senior physician at the 2nd surgical department of the Rudolfstiftung Hospital. During several stays at New York University Medical Center (NYU) he trained in vascular surgery with Anthony Imparato . In 1974 Redtenbacher performed the first operation of the carotid artery under regional local anesthesia in Europe in the Rudolfinerhaus hospital . As a result, the rate of strokes triggered by the operation could be significantly reduced. In 1978 Redtenbacher completed his habilitation. From 1982 to 1986 Redtenbacher was head of the surgical department at the State Hospital in Klagenfurt. He then worked as a surgeon in Vienna.

He has been married to Maria Renata Attems since 1968.

Scientific interest

Redtenbacher was the first to describe the anatomy of surgical approaches to the internal carotid artery and vertebral artery to the base of the skull and to the entire length of the blood vessels of the lower leg. He has dealt in particular with tumor surgery in the digestive tract and described, among other things, the operation of tumors that fill the entire pelvis, as well as the combined surgical-radiological treatment of pancreatic carcinoma .
