Life

Michael Schroeren studied political science and completed his studies in 1976 at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin with a scientific thesis on Kaiseraugst , the "nonviolent resistance against the nuclear power plant: from legal protest to civil disobedience". In 1977 he noted in the foreword of his work that “this work on the movement against the Kaiseraugst nuclear power plant, although originally done as a 'scientific housework', does not serve science, but practice - as a thoroughly subjective, actively written contribution to the discussion, which is necessary in order to be able to learn from successes and failures for the future ”. During this time Schroeren was politically active in the group "Nonviolent Action Berlin" (GAB) and in the mid-1970s also editor in the West Berlin editorial team of the magazine Graswurzelrevolution .

As a conscientious objector, Michael Schroeren also became a member of the International of War Resisters 'International (WRI), a German section of War Resisters' International (WRI), for which he was temporarily active as a WRI council member. In 1977, together with Roland Vogt , he was the founding editor of the association journal of the Federal Association of Citizens' Initiatives Environmental Protection (BBU), which initially appeared under the title bbu-aktuell and since 1979 as an environmental magazine. In February 1983 he organized the boycott of the census "Census Boycott for Ecology and Peace" as the editor of the Umweltmagazin (BBU) and as an activist for the IDK. “The government says they need the information from us in order to be able to govern better. We say we need the information to be able to defend ourselves better. If the government does not comply with its duty to provide information, neither will we. If the government is silent about nuclear missiles, we keep silent about peace! - asking politicians - citizens do not respond! " The Berliner Morgenpost reported on February 27, 1983 entitled" anarchists fueling the fear of the census ":" ... Against the central figure of the boycott efforts against the 33-year-old former editor of the magazine For 'Freedom Socialism ... Grassroots Revolution ', Michael Schroeren, a criminal investigation procedure has been initiated ... "(p.3) The excessive newspaper publicity was unsuccessful, while the campaign was a success: the 1983 census was suspended.

In the early 1980s he became a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party .
