Michael Sporke

Michael Spörke (born July 14, 1972 in Eisenach ) is a German political scientist, writer and disability politician. He lives in Ratingen .

Scientific work

Spörke obtained his doctorate in 2008. rer. pole. at the University of Kassel . Since then he has mainly taught on aspects of disability policy at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Kassel. Spörke was a research associate at the Bauhaus University Weimar and published numerous articles and book chapters on disability issues. He was a professor at the Fliedner University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf . Since 2013 he has been a consultant for social policy at the Sozialverband Deutschland Landesverband NRW.

Political life

In 1990 he helped found the East German Young Socialists (Jusos).

Between 2004 and 2006 he was a member of the SPD parliamentary group in the city council of Kassel. Spörke is particularly politically active in disability policy. From 1997 to 2006 he was chairman of the Disability Advisory Council of the City of Kassel and from 2006 to 2010 a member of the working committee of the German Disability Council. From 2006 to 2010 he was an advisor to the federal management in the organization representing the interests of the disabled, Self-Determined Living in Germany

Writing work

In 2003 Spörke published The Band that made Janis Joplin famous under the title . Big Brother & the Holding Co. 1965–2003 the biography of the band from singer Janis Joplin , Big Brother and the Holding Company .

In 2009 the English translation of the book was published under the title Living with the myth of Janis Joplin. The History of Big Brother & the Holding Co.

In 2014 McFarland published his new book, the first biography of the blues legend Big Mama Thornton under the title Big Mama Thornton: The Life and Music.
