Michael Treharne Davies
Michael Treharne Davies (born March 13, 1936 in Yeovil , † September 25, 2004 ) was a British teacher and author . From 1992 to 2004 he was President of the international traditionalist Catholic organization Una Voce and responsible for the Association of Una Voce America.
Life
Davies was born to Cyril and Annie (née Garnworthy) Davies. His father, a Welshman, was a Baptist and his mother, who was English, was an Anglican. Davies was raised in Yeovil. He served as a regular in the Somerset Light Infantry during the Malay Emergency, Suez Crisis, and EOKA Campaign in Cyprus .
Davies was a Baptist who converted to Catholicism as a student in the 1950s. As an initial proponent of the Second Vatican Council, Davies criticized the liturgical changes he cited as a result of distortions and misinterpretations of the council's mandates for liturgical reform. Davies later assisted the French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre , founder of the Society of St. Pius X. wrote a three-volume series entitled Apologia Pro Marcel Lefebvre , in which he defended Lefebvre against allegations of disobedience and division for refusing to attend Mass from Paul VI. to celebrate. Although Davies opposed Lefebvre's canonically illegal ordination of four FSSPX bishops in 1988 against the will of Pope John Paul II , he continued to publicly support Lefebvre's defense of the Tridentine Mass and traditional ecclesiastical teachings.
William D. Dinges, professor of religion and culture at the Catholic University of America, described him as one of the most prolific traditionalist apologists internationally .
Davies was a critic of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin in Medjugorje , which he believed to be false. Davies died on September 25, 2004 at the age of 68 after battling cancer and was buried in St. Marys Cemetery , Chislehurst . He left behind his wife Marija, a daughter and two sons, one of whom is the lawyer Adrian Davies.
