Michael Voss

Michael Voss (* 1963 in São Paulo , Brazil) is a New York- based painter with German and Brazilian citizenship.

Life

Michael Voss grew up in Sao Paulo and later in Munich . Here he attended the Academy of Fine Arts from 1992 to 1997 . From 1997 to 2000 he studied at Hunter College of the City New York. Since graduating there, he has been working as a freelance artist and exhibiting mainly in the USA and Germany. He is married to the artist Lael Marshall.

Michael Voss mostly paints his non-representational paintings with oil on canvas. Works for which he uses graphite as a surface-covering color are rare, but striking . Ink drawings on plywood or tennis balls are also rare . Voss' oil paintings are almost always visibly multilayered, so that the colors below shine through the colors applied later. Sometimes only the contours of the layers of paint below can be noticed. However, the paint application is not only built up from the bottom up. Conversely, paint is also removed again, i.e. the layers are broken through in the opposite direction. Although the pictures do not show any recognizable things, they are often named by personal names. In order to develop his pictures, intuition , openness and the pursuit of simplicity play a major role for the painter . Another striking feature of the pictures is the consistently small format (approx. 40 × 30 cm), whereby the exact dimensions of the intimate-looking pictures are never the same, but vary by a few centimeters. Each picture is adapted to its own size or the appropriate picture is developed from each selected format. In a discussion of the exhibition, Kenneth Baker interprets this work on detail ("insistence on detail") as a guide for the viewer to understand and appreciate the value of things in general with the help of the images.
