Michael Widenius , often called Monty , (born March 3, 1962 in Helsinki , Finland; full name Ulf Michael Widenius ) is a Finnish Swedish-language software developer . He was the principal author of the original version of the open source - database management system MySQL and its standard storage engine MyISAM and one of the founders of the company MySQL AB .

MySQL AB was acquired by Sun Microsystems in February 2008 , which in turn was acquired by Oracle in January 2010 . After some criticism of Oracle, Monty Widenius founded the MySQL fork MariaDB .

Life

Widenius studied at the Helsinki University of Technology , which he left without a degree.

In 1995 he founded MySQL AB with fellow students David Axmark and Alan Larsson. After Sun Microsystems took over MySQL AB in 2008, Widenius left the company in 2009 due to dissatisfaction with Sun's release policy and founded Monty Program AB, which under his leadership took over the further development of the MySQL fork MariaDB, which had already been started under MySQL AB. In addition, Widenius is involved in the investment company Open Ocean Capital, which he co-founded .

He has three children, after whom he named his products: MySQL was named after the eldest daughter My, his son Max named MaxDB and MaxScale (proxy server). MariaDB was named after his youngest daughter, Maria.
