Michael Zeynsler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Zeynsler (documented between 1515 and 1559) was a German picture carver.

Live and act

It is believed that Zeynsler was trained in Ulm and later worked as a journeyman in Memmingen on the choir stalls of the Martinskirche, since a journeyman "Michael Zynsler" is mentioned several times there for the years 1501/02 and 1505/06. He was first recorded in Biberach an der Riss in 1515 as an applicant with a work permit in his trade. This is granted to him for two years, with the condition that he should not employ a painter journeyman in his workshop. This permit was later extended until it was granted city rights in 1523. Then he submitted an application to the city council to expand his field of activity, because previously he and his journeymen were only allowed to carry out the pure carving work and had to have the decorations carried out by painters. The last mention comes from the year 1559, his work up to this point remains in the dark.

Since none of his works is mentioned or signed in a document, the works assigned to him today are extremely controversial. In 1933 Hans Rott tried to equate him with the previously nameless master of the Biberach clan , which was underpinned in 1952/53 by Gertrud Otto , who assigned him an extensive catalog of oeuvre. Modern research, on the other hand, regards this equality with increasing skepticism, since the complete works compiled for him are of extremely fluctuating quality and contain works of selectively high and provincial quality.
