The Michaela Community School (abbreviated MCS or Michaela ) is a mixed , free, state-funded free private school (Free School) with a secondary school ( high school ) for the age group of 11 to 16 years and two years of post Sixth Form (advanced level, 16 to 18 years old) in Wembley , London Borough of Brent , England . Brent is one of two London boroughs where ethnic minorities make up the majority of the population.

The MCS took part in the national GCSE exams with a group of students for the first time in 2019 and was placed among the top schools in the United Kingdom with a result four times better than the national average.

history

The Michaela School was founded in September 2014 by Katharine Birbalsingh and Suella Braverman . It was named after Birbalsingh's former colleague Michaela Emanus . It started in 2014 with 120 students, in 2017 there were 597 and 840 are planned for 2020, including a sixth form (last 1–3 years of secondary school). The students who come to the Michaela School cannot afford a private school. But they need order and discipline in life that they often lack in their families and communities. The school is denigrated by many media as the strictest school in Great Britain .

The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) rated the school as outstanding in 2017 based on its inspection .

In the Progress 8 benchmark , the school was ranked fifth at the national level.

In November 2019, the school was visited and praised by Andreas Schleicher , OECD Director. In December 2019, The Good Schools Guide selected her as one of 12 schools and rated her as “Strict, but with a warm heart that beats below the surface, Michaela creates a safe but stimulating environment and the opportunity to fly”.

An approved branch is scheduled to open in Stevenage , Herfordshire in 2023 .

School concept

In the 2016 book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Teachers , Michaela's teaching methods were described using traditional classroom teaching by the school's teachers. Practice and memorization are considered important for school success. Students learn to read in one year instead of the usual two. You write several essays a year, learn poetry by heart and read five Shakespeare plays in three years.

The school's focus is on discipline . There is zero tolerance for bad behavior. In a “boot camp” week at the beginning of the year, students are introduced to the rules and the consequences of breaking the rules. In the classrooms, the students sit in the traditional rows of benches. In the school courses they go one after the other without making any noise. They are taught a culture of mutual help , where you help each other and within families and offer adults their own space on buses and the subway.
