The Catholic chapel Michaelskreuz stands above the community of Root in the canton of Lucerne at the top of the Rooterberg at an altitude of almost 800 m. ü. M.

history

The founding of the chapel goes back to a legend according to which the Archangel Michael appeared to the hermit Medardus in the form of a boy around the year 600 and asked him to erect a cross here on the Rooterberg. It seems historically certain that at that time there was actually a mission cross, one of the first to be erected in this area in the course of Christianization. The Christianization of the wider area is said to have taken place from the Michaelskreuz .

In 1436 a wooden chapel was built in place of the cross, which was replaced by a stone chapel around 1800. In 1905 it was consecrated in honor of St. Michael and St. Paul and John . Since the chapel was in danger of falling apart, the Chapel Building Association was founded in 1946 with the aim of saving the chapel from falling apart. The chapel, restored by local craftsmen and farmers, was inaugurated on September 23rd.

60 years later, the chapel was gently renovated by the architect Markus Boyer and consecrated on May 6, 2007 by the vicar general of the diocese of Basel .

The Catholic rectory in Root is responsible. The Michaelskreuz inn is located below the chapel.
