Michel Gauquelin

Michel Gauquelin (born November 13, 1928 - May 20, 1991 in France ) was a psychologist and statistician . Together with his first wife Françoise Schneider-Gauquelin, he tried to prove astrology statistically.

After studying psychology and statistics at the Sorbonne , he devoted himself to the effort to demonstrate the validity of the principles of astrology. The first result of Gauquelin's work appeared in 1951, The Influence of the Stars , in which he analyzed the work of his predecessors in statistical astrology, Paul Choisnard and Karl Ernst Krafft . Gauquelin concluded from this that in the case of successful personalities, the position of certain planets in the horoscope had a distribution that was not random. Gauqelin stated that in his studies he found statistically conspicuous clusters of the positions of Mars in athletes, similar clusters with Jupiter for actors and with Saturn for scientists. However, his analyzes of more than 500,000 birth dates also confirmed that for most of the elements recorded in horoscopes there was no statistical evidence of the effect ascribed to them. The accumulation called by Gauquelin "Mars effect" in certain constellations in relation to outstanding personalities could only be demonstrated for 0.006% of the data and selected constellations. It was later determined that the effect can probably be explained by incorrect information from parents about the dates of birth of their children.

Towards the end of his life, he suggested that astrologers put aside the majority of their traditions and create a reformed system of astrology based on the foundation of only demonstrably statistically correct and verifiable results. He called this neo-astrology , which is the title of his last book, in which he summarized his previous statistical studies. It is often cited by astrologers as an argument in favor of astrology.

His wife Françoise Schneider-Gauquelin (1929-2007) and he separated in 1982. In that year she started her journal Astro-Psychological Problems , which was published until 1995.
