Michel Louette

Michel Louette (* 1948 ) is a Belgian ornithologist .

Life

In 1974 Louette became a curator at the Bird Department of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren . In the following years he conducted field studies in Liberia and Cameroon . In 1977 he received his doctorate with the dissertation De avifauna van Kameroen en hair zoögeografische interpretatie (partim non-passeriformes) at the University of Antwerp . The Royal Museum for Central Africa has been researching biodiversity in the Comoros , a group of islands off the east coast of Africa, since 1981 . Between 1981 and 2003, 17 biological expeditions, of which Louette was one of the lead scientists, traveled to this archipelago in order to research the sensitive ecosystems . In the 1980s, Louette succeeded in rediscovering the Anjouan sparrow , a subspecies of the lizard hawk that has not been detected since 1958. In 1985 he became head of the vertebrate department at the Royal Museum for Central Africa and in 1990 head of the African zoology department.

In 2006 Louette wrote the chapter on the family of the flycatcher family (Platysteiridae) in the eleventh volume of the Handbook of the Birds of the World . In 2008 he published the Atlas des oiseaux nicheurs de la Grande Comore, de Mohéli et d'Anjouan with Hachime Abdérémane, Ibrahim Yahaya and Danny Meirte . In 2011 the book Birds of Katanga was published in collaboration with Michel Hasson and the Royal Museum for Central Africa . In 2013 he worked on the eighth volume of the encyclopedia The Birds of Africa .
