Michele Novaro (born December 23, 1818 in Genoa , † October 21, 1885 in Genoa) was an Italian composer . The national anthem of Italy Il Canto degli Italiani ("Fratelli d'Italia") comes from his pen .

After studying at the singing school in Genoa , the staunch liberal went to Turin as a singer in 1847, where he composed around ten nationalist texts for the freedom of Italy and collected donations for Giuseppe Garibaldi . As a businessman completely untalented, he died impoverished in Genoa in 1885 without having made any profit from his famous songs. He is buried in the monumental cemetery Staglieno near Genoa, next to the crypt of the Italian independence fighter Giuseppe Mazzini .
