Michelle Payne (born September 29, 1985 ) is an Australian jockey . They won with Prince of Penzance the Melbourne Cup of, 2015.

Life

The youngest daughter of Paddy and Mary Payne grew up on a farm in Miners Rest, near Ballarat , Victoria , Australia. Her mother Mary died in a car accident when Payne was six months old, leaving her father Paddy to raise his ten children alone. As a child, Payne dreamed of winning the Melbourne Cup one day. She attended Loreto College near Ballarat and started riding races when she was 15. She was the eighth Payne child to go into racing. She has Irish ancestry.

The 2019 Australian film Ride Like a Girl is based on the life of Michelle Payne and her historic Melbourne Cup victory in 2015.

Racing career

She won her first race in Ballarat with Reigning , a horse her father trained. In March 2004 Payne had a serious fall while racing at Sandown Racecourse in Melbourne, in which she fractured her skull. Due to the long convalescence, during which she also broke her wrist, her apprenticeship as a racing rider was extended by three months.

Payne won her first Group I race, the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield Racecourse in the saddle of Allez Wonder on October 10th, 2009 and coach Bart Cummings offered her to ride at the Caulfield Cup the following week. Payne was the third woman to take part in the Caulfield Cup.

When she first participated in the Melbourne Cup in 2009, she again rode Allez Wonder from coach Bart Cummings, weighing 50.5 kg. They reached 16th place out of 23 starters. 2010 Payne won with Yosei in the Australian Thousand Guineas at Caulfield Racecourse.

She gained national attention when she won two races at the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington Racecourse in 2015. One was the Hilton Hotels Stakes and the other was the Melbourne Cup . In May 2016, Payne suffered serious abdominal injuries from a fall while racing in Mildura . A ruptured liver had to be treated, it is not yet known if she will be racing again.

In October 2016, Payne received the Don Award from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Melbourne Cup 2015

Payne won the Melbourne Cup on November 3, 2015 on Prince of Penzance , a six-year-old gelding that she had ridden for a long time. Payne became the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup in its 155-year history. Coincidentally, their racing colors matched the colors of the suffragettes : purple, green, and white. She hopes her victory will help other "female jockeys" in the future. Payne's win surprised the bookmakers . Prince of Penzances , who had been bought for the comparatively modest amount of $ 50,000, was considered a blatant outsider with a odds of 100: 1. His victory was all the more sensational. The victory in the Melbourne Cup 2015 was endowed with 3.6 million Australian dollars. Of this, the jockey receives 5%, the trainer 10% and the owner 85%.
