Micranthocereus polyanthus ssp. alvinii Bahia 2018

Micranthocereus polyanthus is a species of the genus Micranthocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet describes the "many flowers".

description

Micranthocereus polyanthus grows branching from the base with columnar, bluish green shoots and reaches heights of up to 1.25 meters. The shoots have a diameter of 3.5 to 6 centimeters. There are 15 to 22 (rarely 12) low ribs . The areoles , which are 1 to 2 centimeters apart, are covered with white wool. The 3 to 7 golden yellow to reddish central spines are up to 3 inches long. The 20 to 30 needle-like, whitish to golden yellow radial spines are 5 to 12 millimeters long. The inconspicuous cephalium is located near the tip of the shoot.

The tubular rose- red to slightly rose-colored flowers appear very numerous. They are 1.6 to 1.8 inches long. The fruits are pink.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Micranthocereus polyanthus is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia . It was first described as Cephalocereus polyanthus in 1932 by Erich Werdermann . Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Micranthocereus in 1938 .

Two subspecies are currently distinguished:

Micranthocereus polyanthus ssp. polyanthus from southern Bahia

Micranthocereus polyanthus ssp. alvinii M. Machado & Hofacker from Central Bahia

Micranthocereus polyanthus is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Endangered (EN)," d. H. endangered, classified.
