Micranthocereus is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words "μικρός" (micros) for small and "ἅνθος" (anthos) for flower and means small-flowered Cereus . The type species of the genus is Micranthocereus polyanthus .
description
The species of the genus Micranthocereus grow shrubby to high columnar, are upright, not branched or branched from the base and reach a height of up to three meters. The cylindrical shoots are densely thorn . Their 10 to 30 (or more) narrow ribs are densely covered with areoles , which often produce long wool and thorns. The lateral cephalium is superficial or sunken and is made of wool and bristles.
The tubular flowers , usually appearing in groups, open during the day or at night. They are 2 to 5 inches long. The Perikarpell and the flower tube are, with a few sheds, bald. The bracts are short, erect or spread out and of different colors.
The small, bare, fleshy, red fruits do not tear open. The sparse pulp is almost white. The remnants of the flowers are permanent or fall off late. The almost smooth, pitted seeds are dark brown.
Distribution and systematics
The genus Micranthocereus is common in central and eastern Brazil . It was first described as an originally monotypical genus in 1938 by Curt Backeberg . The genus Micranthocereus is closely related to the genus Arrojadoa .
The type species of the genus is Cephalocereus polyanthus . The genus includes the following species:
- Micranthocereus albicephalus (Buining & Brederoo) F.Ritter
- Micranthocereus auriazureus Buining & Brederoo
- Micranthocereus oliveirae P.J. Brown
- Micranthocereus flaviflorus Buining & Brederoo
- Micranthocereus polyanthus (Werderm.) Backeb.
- Micranthocereus purpureus (gherkin) F.Ritter
- Micranthocereus streckeri Van Heek & Van Criek.
- Micranthocereus violaciflorus Buining
Anderson leads Austrocephalocereus Backeb. and Siccobaccatus P.J.Braun & Esteves as synonyms. Recent genetic studies have shown that Micranthocereus (in the broader sense) is polyphyletic and that Siccobaccatus deserves its own genus status (see there for individual records).
