Micranthocereus albicephalus is a species of the genus Micranthocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet albicephalus means 'white-headed, white-headed'.

description

Micranthocereus albicephalus grows branching from the base with columnar, green shoots and reaches heights of up to 2.5 meters. The shoots have a diameter of up to 9 centimeters. There are up to 22 ribs . The areoles , which are 3 to 5 millimeters apart, are covered with light yellow wool and white hair. From them arise numerous straight, up to 15 millimeters long, thin, piercing, golden-yellow thorns , one of which is directed downwards. The 30 to 40 centimeters long and 8 to 9 centimeters wide cephalium consists of dense white wool and golden yellow bristles up to 6 centimeters long.

The somewhat bell-shaped flowers are white and open at night. They are 4.5 to 5 inches long. The spherical fruits reach a diameter of 3 to 3.5 centimeters.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Micranthocereus albicephalus is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It was first described as Austrocephalocereus albicephalus in 1973 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo . Friedrich Ritter placed them in the genus Micranthocereus in 1979 .

Micranthocereus albicephalus was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened , d (NT)". H. low risk, classified. In 2013 the species is classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
