Micranthocereus flaviflorus is a species of the genus Micranthocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the yellow flowers.

description

Micranthocereus flaviflorus grows branching from the base with columnar bluish green shoots and reaches heights of up to 75 centimeters. The shoots have a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. There are about 16 slightly tuberous ribs . The oval areoles are covered with white wool, which later turns gray, and hair up to 1 centimeter long. The yellowish-brown thorns that arise from them turn dirty white with age. The approximately 9 central spines are between 0.6 and 1.3 inches long. The central central spine is more robust and is up to 2 centimeters long. The numerous translucent radial spines are up to 5 millimeters long. The cephalium consists of white wool and hair-like thorns that are up to 1 centimeter long.

The tubular flowers are red to rose red to bright cream or yellowish. They are up to 1.8 centimeters long and have a diameter of 6 millimeters. The berry-like, bright red fruits are 7 to 8 millimeters long and have the same diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Micranthocereus flaviflorus is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia . The first description was published in 1974 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo (1917-1999).

  • Micranthocereus flaviflorus ssp. densiflorus (Buin. & Bred.) PJBraun & Esteves
  • Micranthocereus flaviflorus ssp. uilianus (Bred. & Bercht) PJBraun & Esteves

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
