The subgenus forms the sister group of the guppies ( Acanthophacelus ) within the genus Poecilia . After the last major revision of the viviparous toothcarps by P. Lucinda (2005), Micropoecilia was still listed as a genus, but it was already recognized that the genus Poecilia cannot be a monophylum . Bragança , Costa and Gama described (2010) to be Micropoecilia to computing sarrafae Poecilia , which Micropoecilia the synonym for Poecilia was. 2012 followed by the first description of Poecilia Waiapi by the same authors.
