Microrasbora rubescens ( Latin : "rubescens" = reddish), called red dwarf grassbora , is a very small South Asian danioninae . It is endemic to the Burmese Inle Lake and the adjacent waters.

features

Microrasbora rubescens is only 3 to 3.5 cm long. Females are bigger and stronger. The body is elongated and laterally flattened and has a yellowish to bluish-silver basic color. A dark longitudinal line extends from below the dorsal fin to the tail fin stalk, where it ends in a round, black spot. Another black spot can often be seen just before the anal fin approach. Sexually mature specimens are orange to red on the sides of the body and on the underside of the head, while males are completely red during the mating season. The fins of Microrasbora rubescens are colorless and transparent. The pelvic fins are relatively long. A sideline is missing.

Way of life

Microrasbora rubescens lives in large swarms in dense vegetation on the shores of Inle Lake and in surrounding ponds and swamps. The water in its habitat is relatively hard and cool (20 to 22 ° C). Fish kept in aquariums remain pale in soft water.

The IUCN classifies the species as Endangered . Pollution and the introduction of invasive species are believed to be the main reason the species is endangered.
