history

Middelburg Bridge over the Ems-Jade Canal 2012

The village of Middelburg, Mittelburg or Middelbörg probably originally consisted of just one building in the immediate vicinity of today's Middelburg Bridge or its predecessors. The construction of the first bridge took place with the canal construction in the eighties of the 19th century. This old swing bridge was replaced by a concrete bridge in 1936. As part of this construction project, the course of today's federal road was straightened and the location of the new bridge relocated by approx. 30 meters. This bridge was replaced in 1978 by a new building in the same place.

Middelburg was mentioned in documents in 1857:
“When the Middelbörg inn burned down on April 2, 1857, the people of Schirum tried to stop the further concession and take them over. But the office supported the continuation. Because, as far as the news went, there had always been a restaurant and tavern there for at least 40 years (statute-barred period), the location was very favorable and very valuable for traffic and because the town of Aurich was sometimes overcrowded at fairs and then similar to in the cold horns some travelers could be accommodated with their horses. In the past, the Middelbörg was often visited by Aurichern as a coffee house, but the size has decreased for years under a poorly performing owner. The current owner is able to rebuild the house and furnish it in a contemporary way ”. (Ostfriesische Nachrichten of January 18, 1969).

The building must have been built before 1817. The owner of the rebuilt building is likely to have been a Dutchman, as he sold the property after another fire in 1880. Up until now, the buildings were located in the immediate vicinity of the district boundary of Schirum . The new building, completed in 1882, was placed further in the direction of the Ems-Jade Canal , which was under construction , as the innkeeper had to take care of the canal operation on behalf of the hydraulic engineering administration for one thaler a month . When there was another fire in 1921, the barn wing was destroyed by flames; the front building could be saved.

In 1998, after the restaurant was closed, the property was sold and today a tree nursery is operated on the site, as is the shooting club “Germania” Middelburg from 1927 e. V. resident.
