Middle Earth (Club)

The Middle Earth (formerly Electric Garden ) was a London hippie -Club in the second half of the 1960s. After the UFO Club was closed in 1967, Middle Earth took over its role, competing with the Roundhouse .

The club was in a basement at 43 King Street in Covent Garden . Mostly DJ Jeff Dexter led through the night, but John Peel also gave a few guest appearances. Groups that performed in Middle Earth included Pink Floyd , The Who , The Crazy World of Arthur Brown , The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band , Fairport Convention , Jefferson Airplane , Eric Burdon , Captain Beefheart, and The Byrds . More or less regularly played at Middle Earth Soft Machine , Tomorrow , Sam Gopal's Dream , Tyrannosaurus Rex with Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took , the Social Deviants and the Graham Bond Organization .

After a police raid on March 3, 1968, the club closed. Then there were some Middle Earth events in the roundhouse.
