Miescher is a Swiss family name .

origin

The family originally comes from the Bern region and produced several natural scientists and politicians in the 19th and 20th centuries . Christen Miescher (1746–1809) from Walkringen , who was sent to the Diet, is considered to be the progenitor . His grandchildren settled in Burgdorf and founded the first mechanical flax spinning mill there .

With the physician Friedrich Miescher-His (1811-1887), also a grandson of Christen Miescher, a branch of the family came to Basel . The biomedical research institute in Basel was named after his son of the same name (1844–1895), while another son, Paul Miescher (1849–1922), became director of the Basel industrial works. From the next generation of the Basel family branch, the chemist Karl Miescher (1892–1974), the physician Guido Miescher (1887–1961) and the politicians Rudolf Miescher (1880–1945) and Ernst Miescher (1872–1945). The latter's son of the same name (1905–1990) was a professor of physics.
