Friedrich Miescher-His was the son of Johannes Miescher, a Bernese farmer and cloth merchant. He went to school in Biel and graduated from high school there in 1827 . Then he worked in his father's trading business for a year. In 1828 (until 1832) he began studying medicine at the Academy in Bern. After studying in Bern, Friedrich Miescher-His moved to Berlin in 1832 . In 1837 Friedrich Miescher-His was employed as a full professor at the then small medical faculty of the University of Basel . At the time he was 26 years old. It was a professorship in physiology and general pathology . In 1844 he moved to Bern because he was appointed to the Inselspital as a doctor . Miescher-His also received a full professorship at the University of Bern and was a member of the medical commission. In 1845 he became a member of the Medical-Surgical Society of the Canton of Bern ; in the summer of 1849 he was appointed president of the same society.

But as early as 1850 he moved back to Basel, as a change of government in Bern threatened his position. He took over his old position as full professor for general pathology in Basel and contributed to the boom in the medical faculty in the 1860s. In 1855 he was called back to Bern as a full professor, but Friedrich Miescher-His turned it down. On November 30, 1871, the educational council of the canton of Basel-Stadt officially adopted him after Friedrich Miescher-His had submitted a dismissal request to the board of trustees of the University of Basel just under a month earlier, on October 17.

The son of Friedrich Miescher His, the same Friedrich Miescher was also physician and physiologist. Another son of the couple was Karl Otto Miescher (1851–1890). He was a notary and worked in civil courts. Karl Otto Miescher was married to Emilie Sarasin (1858–1885).
