Rental chef

A rental chef, traveling chef or sturgeon cook (from Stör ; for the origin of the word, see there) is a cook who prepares meals by the hour or by the day in foreign kitchens.

A temporary rental cook is to be distinguished from a private cook who is permanently employed in a private household and is therefore part of the domestic staff.

Areas of application

Hire chefs work - comparable to temporary workers , but mostly freelance - in the kitchen brigades of restaurants to cover bottlenecks, or in private households on special occasions such as family celebrations, where the purchasing of ingredients and cleaning the kitchen are also part of their work. The service of the rental chef differs from catering or party service in that he does not deliver any finished dishes and does not provide kitchen equipment, dishes, etc.

Hiking cooks or cooking women were in the Prussia of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in Pomerania and Silesia common. Young women went into “jobs” after six to eight years of schooling. This means that they were employed by better-off families (landowners, large farmers, etc.) and mainly took on kitchen work there. By changing employers, they learned different types of preparation, recipes and customs. At large celebrations such as weddings, these cooks then wandered to the respective events and cooked in foreign kitchens. Unmarried women thus partially secured their livelihoods.
