Migishi Kōtarō ( Japanese 三 岸 好 太郎 ; born April 18, 1903 ; died July 1, 1934 ) was a Japanese painter in the Yōga style.

Live and act

Migishi began to be interested in oil painting while attending middle school in Sapporo and studied under the painter Hayashi Takejirō ( 林 竹 治郎 ; 1871-1940). After graduating from school in 1920 he went to Tokyo. There he was very impressed by Cézanne and van Gogh, whom he saw for the first time at an exhibition by the artist group Shirakaba . In the following year, pictures of him were shown at the third "Central Art Exhibition" ( 中央 美術展 , Chūō bijutsuten ).

In 1923 he showed "Girl with Lemon" ( レ モ ン 持 て る 少女 , Remon moteru shōjo ) at the first exhibition of Shun'yō-kai ( 春陽 会 ). At the second exhibition in the next year he received first prize for his picture "Portrait of a Friend" ( 友人 の 肖像 , Yūjin no shōzō ). In the year he founded together with Yokobori Kakujirō ( 横 堀 角 次郎 ; 1897-1978), a colleague from the Shun'yō-kai, and others the Rokujin-sha and made a first exhibition. In the same year he married the painter Yoshida Setsuko . He also showed at the following exhibitions of the Shun'yō-kai the pictures “Youngsters” ( 少年 , Shōnen ; 3rd exhibition), “Girls from China” ( 志 那 の 少女 , Shina no shōjo ; 5th exhibition) and “Girls as a clown ”( 少女 道 化 , Shōjo dōke ),“ Man with a mask ”( お 面 の 男 / 道 化 , Omen no otoko / dōke ) at the 7th exhibition.

In 1928 Migishi participated together with Chōkai Seiji and his wife in a three-way exhibition, on which, among other things, his picture "Botanical Garden" ( 植物園 , Shokubutsu-en ) was shown. In 1929 he participated in the founding of the "Independent Art Society" ( 独立 美術 協会 , Dokuritsu bijutsu kyōkai ) and became its member. In the following year he showed "mold and clown" ( 白馬 と 道 化 , Hakuba to dōke ), "Marionette" ( マ リ オ ネ ッ ト , Marionetto ) and other pictures at the first exhibition. In the next few years until his death he showed important pictures at the following exhibitions.

From 1932 Migishi was strongly influenced by French modernism, which he showed at the exhibition “Avant-garde Exhibition - Paris” ( 前衛 絵 画展 - パ リ ; Zen'ei kaigaten - Pari ) and at the exhibition of the “Progressive Art League” ( 進行美術 同盟 , Shinkō bijutsu dōmei ) in Tokyo. He combined these new ideas from abstract painting with a color scheme of Fauvism, then switched to Surrealism. Works from this period are “Young clown, standing clown” ( 青年 道 化 、 立 て る 道 化 , Shōnen dōke, tateru dōke ), “Orchestra” ( オ ー ケ ス ト ラ , Ōkesutora ), “Composition” ( コ ン ポ ジ シ ョ ン) , Composition butterfly “( 飛 ぶ 蝶 , Tobu chō ) and“ Sea and Light ”( 海 と 射 光 , Umi to shakō ).

In 1934 Migishi published at his own expense a long poem entitled "Butterflies and Shells" ( 蝶 と 貝殻 , Chō to kaigara ), which he provided with light colored illustrations. In the same year he fell ill while traveling and died on the way in Nagoya. His home prefecture dedicated a museum in Sapporo to his estate , the "Migishi-Kōtarō-Museum of Hokkaidō Prefecture" ( 北海道 三 三 岸 好 美術館 美術館 , Hokkaidō-ritsu Migishi Kōtaro bijutsukan ).
