Miguel Ángel Castillo (born September 29, 1915 in San Salvador , † before 1980) was a colonel and from October 26, 1960 to January 25, 1961 president of a Junta Cívico-Militar of El Salvador .

Under the José María Lemus López government , Castillo commanded the customs troops .

Junta Cívico-Militar

At 44 years old, Colonel Miguel Ángel Castillo was the oldest member of the Junta Cívico-Militar , which took power in El Salvador on October 26, 1960. Other members of this junta were:

  • Colonel César Yáñez Urias (* 1931), son of the founder of the Navy of El Salvador, commander of the Cuartel San Carlos in San Salvador.
  • Major Rubén Alonso Rosales (* 1925) was Deputy Commandant of the General Staff, El Zapote .
  • Dr. Fabio Castillo was a doctor and studied at the Universidad de El Salvador.
  • RA René Fortin Magaña (* 1931) studied at the Universidad de El Salvador.
  • RA Ricardo Falla Cáceres (* 1921) studied at the Universidad de El Salvador.

The newly constituted Junta Cívico-Militar allowed expatriate citizens from El Salvador to return to El Salvador, lifted the state of emergency , lowered the budget for reptile funds, emptied prisons and promised to grant far-reaching political freedoms. They did not intend to reform social or economic conditions. Mario Antonio Andino Gómez was arrested on November 18, 1960 and released the next day. The outgoing US administration under Dwight D. Eisenhower did not recognize the junta as a government, which weakened the support of the Junta Cívico-Militar in the FAES .

On November 25, 1960, the Partido Demócrata Cristiano was founded.

The Partido Revolucionario de Abril y Mayo (PRAM) complained to the Supreme Court that it was not entered in the electoral register. On December 8, 1960, the Supreme Court ruled in their favor.

On December 16, 1959, a site in San Salvador was occupied and in January 1960 the resulting settlement was legally sanctioned as Colonia Atlacatl .

The frequently disregarded electoral law has been replaced by Decree # 38, which regulates the candidacy and election registration procedure.

Relations with Cuba were maintained when all other governments of the Organization of American States, aligned by the US government, ceased diplomatic relations.

The Junta Cívico-Militar was popular. John F. Kennedy assumed the office of US President on January 20, 1961. On January 25, 1961, the Directorio Cívico-Militar launched a coup against the incumbent Junta Cívico-Militar .

A protest march, led by a group of officers, asked for weapons to defend the Junta Cívico-Militar , which they were denied. The protest march passed through San Salvador to the barracks that were supporting the Junta Cívico-Militar to demonstrate their position when they were shot at with automatic weapons. The protest march threatened a general strike. The Directorio Cívico-Militar ordered units of the Policia Nacional and the Guardia Nacional to break up the protest parade. Approximately 100 people were shot dead. The members of the Junta Cívico-Militar were placed under arrest and exiled.
