Miguel Ángel González Dávila (born November 15, 1970 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican boxer .

amateur

Gonzalez beat Gabriel Ruelas and qualified for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . There he was eliminated in the preliminary round. As an amateur, he was able to win 63 out of 66 fights.

professional

In 1989 he turned pro and on August 24, 1992 won the vacant WBC lightweight title against the powerful Colombian Wilfredo Rocha, who also had him on the ground. He defeated Héctor López and stopped the French European champion Jean-Baptiste Mendy. He later knocked out the undefeated Leavander Johnson .

But then his performance dropped significantly. He complained of weight problems, journalists reprimanded him as a party animal. The Argentinean Ricardo Silva (ten defeats) could only be beaten on points. He later struggled to defeat the not world-class Lamar Murphy.

He gave up his title to move up to the light welterweight division. When he finally met Óscar de la Hoya here in January 1997 , he was just a shadow of himself and lost high on points. In 1998 he fought against Julio César Chavez , who was also on the decline, in a draw, in 1999 he was knocked out against Kostya Tszyu .

He lost several of his other fights against weak opponents such as Manuel Gómez in 2001, as well as in the opinion of some critics undeserved title fights in 2004 against Cory Spinks and in 2005 against Luis Collazo in the welterweight division.
