from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miguel Soares is a politician from East Timor . He is a member of FRETILIN .

In the 2001 elections, Soares was elected to 6th place on the FRETILIN list in the Constituent Assembly, which became the National Parliament of East Timor when it became independent on May 20, 2002 . In the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2007 Soares no longer stood as a candidate.

In the assembly, Soares was one of the MPs who spoke out against the inclusion of “sexual orientation” in the constitutional points that prevent people from being discriminated against. He explained that this could create contradiction and confusion at a moment when Timor was just beginning to become a nation. In the end, 13 MPs spoke out in favor of including the point and 52 against. 14 abstained.
