Mike Nesbitt

Mike Nesbitt (born May 11, 1957 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a Northern Irish politician.

biography

Nesbit came from a Northern Irish Protestant family and grew up in Belfast. He attended Campbell College there and was active for a while as an amateur athlete ( 400 meter hurdler ). He was later a sports reporter for the BBC and then a newscaster for 10 years for the Northern Irish television channel UTV. From 2008 to 2010 he served as Victims' Commissioner , an office that had been created to represent the interests of those affected by the conflict in Northern Ireland . In 2010 he joined the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) and ran unsuccessfully in the British general election in the Strangford constituency , but won a mandate for the Northern Ireland Assembly in the election the following year . From 2012 to 2017 he was party leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.

After the 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly election , in which the UUP performed disappointingly, Nesbitt announced his resignation from the party leadership.
