Michael "Mike Spike" Froidl (born December 17, 1964 in Regen , Bavarian Forest) is a German visual artist, film and book author.

Life

Mike "Spike" (actually: Michael) Froidl grew up in Munich in 1970. From 1985 to 1991 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Robin "Bluebeard" Page , who made him a master student. From 1994 to 1997 Froidl was an assistant in the Page class. In addition, from 1990 to 1998 he had lessons in the art of Far Eastern calligraphy with the Zen monk K. Kuwahara.

Since his childhood in the 1970s, Froidl has been influenced on the one hand by the comic culture and on the other hand by the work of the old masters such as Albrecht Dürer . Froidl even had several Dürer motifs tattooed extensively: " The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse ", " Knight, Death and the Devil " etc. Froidl was invited to the live talk show Club 2 on Austrian television in 1990 to talk to experts about the phenomenon of tattoos as an artist to discuss. Froidl is also inspired by modern artists such as Toulouse Lautrec and Egon Schiele .

Mike Spike Froidl turns Robin Page into "Bluebeard"

Mike Spike Froidl has been active in the Munich punk scene since the mid-1980s. On his punk birthday party December 17, 1985, on the Froidl and his punk friends the Iroquois cuts nachfärbten, the snow-white lumberjack beard of invitees Art Academy Professor Robin Page has been colored blue. This inspired Page that after 1987 he wore his beard forever blue and henceforth called himself "Bluebeard". “Bluebeard” kept this blue beard until his death on May 12, 2015 in Canada.

In 1986 Mike Spike Froidl founded the action and performance group "Flexhead Orders". Film and photo works are created.

During this time he also begins martial arts training, which over the years leads him to mastery in Filipino Modern Arnis and Japanese Aikido . The images from the eighties have a clear comic language. Examples of this are the series of portraits of famous German punks and the battle pictures, for example about the Yugoslav Wars and the Second Gulf War in Iraq.

With the study of calligraphy with the Japanese Zen monk Kuwahara, more Asian pictorial elements and composition concepts play a role in Froidl's painting from the mid-1990s. ( Example )

In 1992 Froidl started a performance campaign in Spain that gave him the nickname "Don Chaos": He traveled for weeks through Spain in self-made knight armor made of sheet metal as a modern Don Quixote as "Don Chaos" and documented these campaigns in film, photos ( example ) and drawings .

In 1997 Froidl traveled to China and documented his impressions in the film "Don Chaos-Tse" made there. In the same year his book “Pogo-Do - the way of fighting dance” is published by Peter Seyferth-Verlag.

Since moving to Berlin (1998), Froidl has only been painting scrolls in the style of the Japanese Kakemono . Froidl's works are a mixture of Far Eastern and Western painting techniques with a political or socially critical message. Printing techniques such as linocut flow into his work.

In 2005 the artist received a criminal complaint from the Bavarian police for allegedly disseminating pornography in the outdoor gallery on Corso Leopold , organized by Munich-based Projektraum curators and cultural activists Michael Wladarsch (84 GHz) and his wife Sylvia Katzwinkel . Froidl's work was confiscated by the police. A short time later, the Munich public prosecutor dropped the case, confirming that Froidl's art is not porn, but art. In 2013 the 84 GHz cultural project received the Schwabing Art Prize for its achievements in Munich's cultural life - laudator Mike Spike Froidl. With his series of images such as “Climate Change”, “Fukushima” and “Fortress Europe”, Mike Spike Froidl reacts to the political and social upheavals and upheavals of current affairs.

Froidl documents the recurring chaos of the punks in Hanover (1994 to 2000) in films and in a series of street battle paintings. Mike Spike Froidl appears in person and with his art in the punk political satire film "Never again work" from 1998 (M. Mayr aka De Sastro) and in the feature film Chaostage - We Are Punks! , 2008 by Tarek Ehlail. Mike Spike Froidl is documented as an artist in the documentary "Mia san dageng" 2007 by Oli Nauerz and Katz Seger.
