Michael Ernst Ettmüller (born August 26, 1673 in Leipzig ; † September 25, 1732 there ) was a German physician.

Life

Michael Ernst Ettmüller was the son of Michael Ettmüller and his wife Magaretha Bose. He lost his father when he was 10 years old. After Ettmüller had completed his first education at the grammar schools in Altenburg and Zittau , he began to study at the University of Wittenberg on May 2, 1692 . Following the university customs of the time, he first completed a basic course in philosophy. At the time, teachers at the philosophical faculty were Christian Röhrensee in ethics, Konrad Samuel Schurzfleisch in history, Christian Donati in logic, Michael Strauch in lower mathematics, Michael Walther in higher mathematics, Konstantin Ziegra in physics and Georg Kasper Kirchmaier in rhetoric.

He soon moved back to his hometown, where he earned a master's degree in philosophy. As a result, he switched to the medical sciences, where he followed the lectures of Johannes Bohn (1640-1718), Johann Friedrich Ortlob (1661-1700) and Johann Wilhelm Pauli (1658-1723) at the University of Leipzig . In 1697 he went on a two-year educational trip that took him through Germany, England and Holland . Returned to Leipzig, he received his doctorate in medicine in 1699 . The Leipzig council then ordered him to see a doctor at the local hospital. In 1702 he was appointed associate professor of medicine at the Leipzig University. On October 11, 1702 he was elected a member ( matriculation no. 253 ) of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Alexius . In 1706 he became a full professor of anatomy and surgery, in 1719 professor of physiology and in 1724 professor of pathology.

He had also participated in all kinds of organizational tasks. Ettmüller was Decemvir of the academy, member of the great prince's college, 1730 director of the Leopoldina and in the winter semester 1723 rector of the Leipzig Alma Mater . He had earned academic merits with the edition of his father's works. In addition to a large number of different medical writings, he has contributed to the Miscellen Naturum Curiosorum (writings of the Royal Prussian Academy) and the Acta Eruditorum .

In 1712 he had married Magdalene Sophie (née Rüdinger), the widow of the Weißenfels councilor Peter Trekel. This connection resulted in a daughter who died young.
