Miklós Misztótfalusi Kis (* 1650 in Misztótfalu , † 1702 in Kolozsvár ) was a Hungarian type caster , typographer , die cutter and printer .

Life

In 1680 Kis went to Holland to study theology there. From Hungary he got the order to have a bible printed in Hungarian. As part of this, he began training with the Amsterdam type cutter and foundryman Dirk Voskens. After completing his apprenticeship, he started his own business in Amsterdam in 1683. He had already made a name for himself during his training, especially through his cuts in Armenian and Hebrew scripts . On behalf of King Artsil, he cut several variants of a Georgian alphabet .

The cover sheet of the Hungarian Bible commissioned by Kis and a typeface sample sheet from 1684/85 are preserved evidence of his time in Amsterdam. Kis had business relationships with Italy, Poland, Sweden, England and Germany. In 1689 he left Holland to return to Hungary via Leipzig. In 1694 he opened a type foundry and printing shop in Kolozsvár. He also continued to cut his own stamps, which he used in addition to those he had brought with him from Holland. The quality of his prints and font styles was outstanding for the time, but did not catch on in Hungary. In 1702 Kis died in Kolozsvár.
