The Miklavatn ( Icelandic Big Lake ) is a lake in northern Iceland south of the town of Sauðárkrókur .

The lake is east of Sauðárkróksbraut (road 75) and west of the western part of Héraðsvötn . The lake from the west bank and the area between the lake and the Héraðsvötn have been under nature protection since 1977 and entry is prohibited during the breeding season from May 15 to July 1. The entire protected area has an area of ​​14.8 km². Because of its importance as a breeding and moulting area , the Sauðárkrókur floodplain including the Miklavatn is designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area IS053.
